FORMER BBC Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond’s new mega-garage at his £2 million castle have been given the green light by Herefordshire Council.
The former BBC star, 50, put in an application to tear down a stable block and replace it with a new barn, after thieves struck his country manor and stole tractor parts.
The plans submitted to Herefordshire Council over the summer state the existing blocks “fall short” of the horse riding needs of the family.
The plans for Bollitree Castle, in Weston-under-Penyard near Ross-on-Wye, have since been given the go-ahead, with certain conditions, by planners.
Hammond also wanted space for this estate workers to park and store kit at the Grade II* listed home.
The new barn will house his ride-on mowers, John Deere tractor, a couple of Land Rovers, kit for horse riding and 10 or 11 parking bars for a car and motorbike collection.
The planning application submitted by Ford Architecture on behalf of Hammond read: “Currently the estate has no storage outside the domestic curtilage of the house other than the existing stables and a small lean to for hay and feed.
“As there is no storage provision for any farm or equestrian vehicles and their equipment, these are currently left outside, recently leading to the theft of tractor parts.
“The existing stable block of five stables, feed and tack room falls short of the accommodation now required by the owners established equestrian pursuit.
“It is not the size of the stables but where they are currently located, access to the paddocks is tenuous and doesn’t facilitate any autonomous access and egress to the paddocks which is essential to the owners horses.
“In addition to the agricultural and equestrian use of the estate the owner has a collection of cars and motorcycles which support his work as a motoring journalist.
“Currently these are housed ‘ad hoc’ in the listed barns or in the open courtyard. Secure storage and parking for this collection of vehicles is fundamental to the owners needs.
“Removal of these vehicles from the listed buildings is also desired so that they can be used domestically.”
The application showed the walls would be timber clad and the building would have profiled sheet roofing.
Passing the proposal, planners said they needed to be told about which specific materials would be used, as well as knowing where builders will park and how they will avoid mud on nearby roads.
Queen Elizabeth is breaking with tradition this year as she rings in Christmas at Windsor Castle instead of at Sandringham House in Norfolk.
After careful consideration, the monarch, 94, and her husband, Prince Philip, 99, made the decision to celebrate the holiday season at Windsor Castle, where they have spent much of the year isolating amid the pandemic.
“Having considered all the appropriate advice, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have decided that this year they will spend Christmas quietly in Windsor,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said earlier this month.
Although the royal family has been celebrating Christmas at the Queen’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk, about 100 miles north of London, for over three decades, it wasn’t unusual for holiday festivities to take place at Windsor Castle in the 1980s. The last time the family gathered at Windsor Castle for Christmas was in 1987.
PHOENIX — You have likely seen Tovrea Castle out the car window while traveling along the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway either to or from downtown Phoenix.
It’s the yellow, four-tiered building atop of a hill in the middle of the desert and, to some, resembles that of a wedding cake or a castle. At night, hundreds of lights illuminate each tier of the building.
Perhaps you’ve wondered what it was? Does someone live there? Are people allowed inside?
Here is the much-abridged history: In the early 1900s, Alessio Carraro, an Italian gold miner and land developer had a dream to build a resort community and neighborhood, called Carraro Heights, near Phoenix with a hotel as its centerpiece. However, due to some buildings and land being sold, the financial impacts of the Great Depression, and, at the time, being very close to the Tovrea Stockyards, which raised and processed cattle, those dreams were never realized
The hotel was built and is the structure that remains.
In the 1930s, Edward Ambrose “E.A.” Tovrea, who founded the Tovrea Stockyards, bought the hotel and 44 acres of land from Carraro. Tovrea died a year later, and his wife lived at the castle until her death in 1969, according to Tovrea Castle’s website.
So, it was slated to be a hotel and at one point became someone’s home.
The City of Phoenix bought the building in 1993. In 2011, the Tovrea Carraro Society was formed and given permission to support, manage, and give tours, which supports the upkeep of the building.
Though, getting a tour could be a challenge. They’re popular and sell-out quickly, often months in advance. The grounds are only open for private tours.
HOW TO BOOK A TOUR
Beginning with its spring 2021 tours, the Tovrea Carraro Society announced that tours would be booked via a lottery system.
“Due to an overwhelming demand, …Tovrea Castle Society has determined that a lottery ticket system is the only fair mechanism for distribution of tickets to our guests,” the Society said in an email to its subscribers, as well as a note on its website.
The lottery opens Dec. 7-13, 2020, for tours between February and May 2021.
To enter, visit tovreacastletours.com/castle-tours. You will then select three days you’re interested in, as well as how many tickets you would need (1-4 tickets allowed). Tickets are $22 per person. Children two and younger are free but must be accompanied by an adult, according to the website.
The auction of Villa Firenze, a mansion in Beverly Hills, California, once asking $165 million, will take place over eight days beginning Jan. 26, according to Concierge Auctions, which is handling the sale.
The 13-bedroom Italian palazzo-style mansion and surrounding 9.87-acre estate in the ultra-affluent, guard-gated Beverly Park community is likely to be the most expensive home ever to sell at auction in the U.S. Registered buyers will have roughly a week to bid online for the Los Angeles-area property, which will sell to the highest bidder without reserve, Concierge announced this week.
The lavish home has been listed with Hilton & Hyland since 2018, first hitting the market in 2018 for $165 million. It’s still listed on the market asking $160 million.
The seller, aircraft leasing billionaire Steven F. Udvar-Hazy, has owned the property for nearly three decades, building the main mansion in the late ’90s, according to property records.
It’s the largest assemblage in North Beverly Park, one of the most exclusive enclaves in Los Angeles, and comes with a two-story guest house, tennis court and walking trails that lace through nearly 10 acres. The property is made up of two distinct parcels, giving the owner the option to expand or separately develop the smaller of the two lots, according to the listing with Hilton & Hyland.
The palatial main house spans 20,000 square feet, including 13 bedrooms, 17 full bathrooms and eight partial bathrooms.
“Over five years in the making, this is truly a masterpiece that is quite possibly impossible to recreate,” Mr. Udvar-Hazy said in a statement. “Many of the world’s most desirable, coveted items are sold at auction—and like these, Villa Firenze is also a work of art in itself.”
There are no comparable properties in North Beverly Park, where the estate offers the next owners “impeccable privacy,” said Rick Hilton, co-founder of Hilton & Hyland and whose marketing the home with fellow co-founder Jeff Hyland.
Mr. Udvar-Hazy has chosen an auction as a way to expedite the sale, which for homes of this size and value can take time given the small pool of buyers who could afford such a home.
“To our most affluent sellers, time is the ultimate luxury,” Mr. Hyland said. The seller could have “held this property forever, yet is focused on making their next marquee purchase, and the predictable sale date makes that transition seamless.”
Villa Firenze would set a house auction record even if it sold for a fraction of its asking price. Last year, a mansion in Hillsboro Beach, Florida, set a national record for the priciest house auction when it sold for $42.499 million, Concierge Auctions, which also handled that sale, said at the time.
Where is it located?
The Castle of Mey is situated in Caithness on the northern coast of Scotland. It is a four-and-a-half-hour journey from another of the Royal Family’s Scottish residences, Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire.
When was it built and when was it used as a royal residence?
The castle was built between 1566 and 1572 on the lands of Mey which belonged to the Bishops of Caithness. It is possible that the present castle stands on the site of an earlier construction. The castle’s name was changed from the Castle of Mey to Barrogill Castle and the structure itself was altered multiple times.
The castle was purchased by the recently widowed Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother in 1952, following the death of her husband, King George VI, on February 6 of the same year.
Who has lived there?
The Queen Mother purchased Barrogill Castle when it was in a semi-derelict state to use as a holiday home. She removed some of the 19th-century additions, added electricity and fresh water supplies and reinstated the original name to The Castle of Mey.
The work on the castle was extensive, including making it habitable and weathertight, as well as redecorating the interior. The complete restoration was finally finished in 1960 with the redesign of the west wing. The Queen Mother hung portraits of the previous owners around the castle, including the various Earls of Caithness.
The Queen Mother usually visited the castle in August and October from 1955 until her final visit October 2001, before her death in March 2002.
Who is it used by today?
The Castle of Mey is now owned by the Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust and it is open to the public between May and September every year. It is however closed for ten days between the end of July and the beginning of August which is usually when the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visit the castle during the summer.
As of January 1, 2019, Prince Charles (known as the Duke of Rothesay in Scotland) became the new president for the Castle of Mey Trust, as well as the sole trustee.
